GEOGHEGAN. The sept claim descent from Fiachra, one of the sons of Nial of the Nine Hostages, monarch of Ireland in the fifth century. Their territory ■\•as called Kinel-Fiacha, and extended over the tract now called the barony of Moycashel, with parts of those of Moyashell, Eathcourath, and Fertullagh, in Westmeath, within which they erected various castles, the chief being at Castle-town-Geoghegau near Kilbcggan, whose wide site is marked on the Ordnance Survey.
