  2. English: of uncertain origin, perhaps a topographic name for someone living ‘at the hard’. The noun hard, in Essex and elsewhere, denotes a short causeway leading from the shore into the sea, used by fishermen. Alternatively, the reference may have been to an area of firm ground in a marshy area.
