Italian (Sicily) and Maltese: ethnic name for a person of African descent or occupational name for a mercenary soldier, from medieval Greek atsoupas, plural atsoupades ‘black’, ‘person from Mauritania’, or ‘mercenary soldier’. The word probably derives ultimately from Old Persian takhma spada ‘army’, modern Persian sipah ‘army’.
