English (mainly Lancashire): habitational name from any of several places named Cowgill or Cow Gill, for example in Cumbria, Yorkshire, and Lancashire; all are named with Old Norse gil ‘narrow valley’, ‘ravine’ with various first elements including Old English cu ‘cow’ and Old English col ‘(char)coal’.
