Northern Irish: reduced Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Dhubhdarach or Mac Dhubhdarach ‘descendant (or son) of Dubhdarach’, a personal name meaning ‘black one of the oak tree’. For this reason it has sometimes been Anglicized as Oakes.
