(origin: Local) A village in Cheshire, England, and may have several derivations. Dut-ton, i. e., Dutch-town. Duton, from Du, Cor. Br., side, and ton, the same as dun, a hill, that is, the side of the hill; or Du-ton, the two hills, from Du, two, and ton, a hill. Dhu-ton, Gaelic and Welsh, the black hill.

English: habitational name from any of the places called Dutton, especially those in Cheshire and Lancashire. The first of these is named from Old English dun ‘hill’ + tun ‘enclosure’, ‘settlement’; the second is from Old English personal name Dudd(a) (see Dodd 1) + Old English tun.
