Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó hUisce ‘descendant of Uisce’. Gaelic uisce means ‘water’, and for this reason the name has sometimes been Anglicized as Waters. However, it is more likely to be an altered form of Ó hUarghuis ‘descendant of Uarghus’, a personal name composed of elements meaning ‘cold’ + ‘vigor’.
