English (mainly Essex): habitational name from any of various places, for example in Essex and West Midlands. The former is so called from the Old English personal name Hocca or hocc ‘mallow’ + leah ‘wood’, ‘clearing’; the latter from the personal name Hucca + hlaw ‘hill’.
