  3. German: probably a metonymic occupational name for a cooper, from Middle High German kimme, a term denoting the notch in the staves of a barrel where the base is seated; by extension it also has the meaning ‘edge’, ‘horizon’ and in this sense may also have given rise to a topographic name.
