Irish: reduced Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Sceacháin or Ó Sceacháin ‘son (or ‘descendant’) of Sceachán’, a personal name which appears to be derived from a diminutive of sceach ‘briar’, ‘thorn bush’. The Gaelic name has sometimes been ‘translated’ as Thornton.
