Irish (of Welsh origin): this has generally been assumed to be a derivative of the personal name Dafydd, Welsh form of David. However, Morgan and Morgan think the etymology is more likely to be from Taf(f), the name of two rivers in Wales, one flowing through Cardiff, the other in Pembrokeshire.
